The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a carrier-based, two-seat, supersonic interceptor fighter of the US Navy. It made its maiden flight in 1970 and was in service from 1974 to 2006. Its most distinctive feature is its variable sweep-wing technology: the wings can be swept back depending on flight speed. The F-14 became famous, not least, through the movie “Top Gun”. As a powerful fleet defender with long-range missiles, it shaped the US Navy’s carrier air wings for decades and is still considered one of the most famous fighter aircraft icons.
