The Original – The Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower (French: Tour Eiffel) is the most famous landmark in France and one of the most visited structures in the world. It stands on the Champ de Mars in Paris and was built as a temporary entrance arch for the 1889 World’s Fair. It was designed and built by Gustave Eiffel and his engineering firm. With an original height of 300 meters, the tower was the tallest structure in the world from 1889 to 1930. Today, its height with the antenna is 330 meters. The steel lattice structure, made of around 18,000 metal parts and over 2.5 million rivets, is considered a masterpiece of engineering. Although it was originally intended to be demolished after 20 years, it was preserved due to its usefulness as a radio mast. The Eiffel Tower receives around 7 million visitors annually and is considered the most photographed structure on Earth.
